Just finished my second read through. What a great job. I am proud of you and the fact that
you have taken the time and energy to pass on your seasoned advice to young men and
women who will be fulfilling all of the positions you have outlined, now and in the future.

This is a factual book that should provide success for any officer that really feels the desire
to be competitive and take the next step in accepting the responsibility of leadership.

"Straight from the shoulder advice that will reap success."   "A 'GRAND SLAM' it rounded all
the bases of advice for success."  "Real solid advice and easy to read."  "If you want to be
the RAM ROD of this outfit - a must read."  "Anyone can benefit from the books solid points
of experience."  "Honest, straight forward and useful."

The firefighter will  find "Unless you’re the Lead Dog, The Scenery Never Changes"  very
beneficial. It goes beyond mere professional inquisition. It defines the mental and physical
aspects necessary to succeed in the promotional process no matter what discipline you are
involved with. The book is designed to assist anyone who is involved in an Oral Board or
Assessment Center presentation. I would recommend this book to any firefighter that is
preparing for a promotional exam.

Mark Haskell, Fire Chief, Fountain Valley Fire Department
Good police officers learn from their experience on the streets.
Exceptional police officers also learn from the experience of others.
Hopefully, you will learn the art of becoming competent in promotional exams by the experience of others and not
by your own repetitive failures.

As a former police officer, I know all too well the frustrations of failing a promotional examination.  I only wish Chief
Elvin Miali's book had been written during my law enforcement career as it would have saved me frustration and
disappointment.  I know you can learn from his many years of success as a Chief of Police and personal mentor to
numerous officers.

I highly recommend you study the numerous techniques provided in his book, "Unless You're the Lead Dog, the
Scenery Never Changes."  Don't be a casualty of your own lack of understanding of the promotional system.

This book is a very easy read with common sense stuff that certainly worked for me.  Besides all of the studying
and preparation, there are 2 things that seemed to help me prepare for each promotional; the One on One
meetings with Chief Miali and the standards for career development within the department that he set forth.

I honestly believe the promotional process starts the day you are hired and pin that badge on.  Your peers,
supervisors and citizens alike begin judging and forming opinions about you immediately.

This is a winner. I would suggest this book to anyone who plans on promoting. This is an excellent guide to follow
and should be read early in one's career, not just prior to promotion.

Your book is a quick read (something I appreciate), hard to put down and a book one will keep referring back to.

Chief Miali has evolved a strategy for promoting. His knowledge of the subject is extensive,
experientially obtained, well organized and presented in a manner that is clear and easy to
read...
